Madonna biography - It All Started in New York City
Born in 1958, this singer graduated from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance before doing what she describes as the 'bravest thing I ever did', moving to New York. After a few years of gigging with other bands she signed to Sire Records and released her first solo single 'Everybody' in 1982. Her eponymous first album hit the shelves in 1983, quickly propelling her to the big time and third single 'Holiday' becoming her first true global success.
The rest, as they say, is history. She soon erupted into a musical and cultural sensation, inspiring young people around the world with her lace tops, Capri pants and fishnet stockings. Second album Like a Virgin ensured that her star was not only rising, but was going positively stratospheric. The album's controversial lyrical content and superb pop sounds ensured it was a sure-fire smash hit, going on to sell 25 million copies worldwide.
The year 1985 marked the first time she toured arenas with her Virgin Tour, quickly developing her trademark style of big, brash and sometimes provocative live performances.
