Since 2001 this Catalonian carnival has gathered the best of the best of rock, pop and dance at the Parc del Forum on the Balearic coast. Boasting six outdoor stages, including a stage promoted by alternative online reviewer Pitchfork, and an enormous auditorium, the sprawling site allows revellers to bask in the famous local sunshine while enjoying some of the world's top acts. Growing rapidly in the last few years, the festival and its two satellite events hosted 221 bands in 2012, playing to an audience of 140,000 people. It's not hard to see why its popularity is burgeoning, with the likes of Pulp, New Order and The Smashing Pumpkins among the names on recent bills. Extending the festival further, 2012 also saw the birth of sister event Optimus Primavera Sound in Porto, Portugal. A testament to the popularity of its Spanish big sister, the event adds a Portuguese flavour to the otherwise shared line-up.
